Johnston is geographically located on the northwest side of the Des Moines Metropolitan area and Polk County. Johnston has access to the rest of the Metro via I-80. Johnston was incorporated in September of 1969 and was named after the Johnston Station Railway's freight supervisor, John F. Johnston. The City of Johnston has a population of 19,798, making up 6,369 households, with an average household size of 2.67, and a median household income of $95,460. Pioneer Hi-Bred and John Deere Financial are both based in Johnston.
Johnston is home to the Hyperion Field Club, a private country club that offers 18 holes of golf, tennis, a beautiful pool, a relaxing clubhouse, and an excellent fitness center. Hyperion Field Club is the club of choice to many Johnston residents.
Johnston is served by the Johnston Community School District. There are approximately 6,367 students from preschool through 12th grade that attend this district. It has five elementary schools, two middle schools, one senior high school, and one shared alternative school for grades nine through twelve. The Johnston Community School District is the 13th largest school district in the state of Iowa, and the fourth largest employer in Johnston. The school district employs roughly 840 people, which includes 433 certified teachers and operates with a general fund budget of $58 million dollars. Johnston competes in Class 4-A for extracurriculars. The Dragons represent the Johnston Community School District as their mascot. The district serves Johnston, as well as parts of Urbandale, Des Moines, Grimes, and Granger.
In 2011, Money Magazine ranked Johnston the 13th Best Small Town in the United States.
Tax Increment Financing (TIF) is available in Johnston on a case-by-case basis. The City may provide TIF funds for the purpose of improving City infrastructure and structures, as well as structural and infrastructure improvements to privately owned, commercial, and industrial properties.
