The City of Bondurant was founded in 1884 and established in 1897. Bondurant is geographically located on the northeast side of the Des Moines Metro and can be directly accessed by Highway 65, (from the northeast or southwest) or NE 78th Avenue (from the west) in Polk County. Bondurant was named after Alexander C. Bondurant, who was the area's first settler. He played a large part in the history of Bondurant. Bondurant is a community of approximately 4,614, making up approximately 1,500 households, with an average household size of 3.5, and a median household income of $52,877.
Bondurant has a small town appeal compared to the rest of the Metro. There are plenty of churches, clubs and organizations to take part in, including, but not limited to the 4-H Club, Bluejay Booster Club, Bondurant Chamber of Commerce, Bondurant Lions Club, Bondurant Soccer Club, Bondurant-Farrar Fine Arts Booster Club, Scouts, Softball, Little League, Men's Club, Women's Club, Mother's Club, and Rolling Agers Senior Citizens. Many of these organizations have events or activities going on throughout the year.
Bondurant is in the Bondurant-Farrar Community School District. The school district enrollment is approximately 1,500. This provides individual attention in the classroom and more opportunities in extracurricular activities. The new high school opened in the fall of 2010 and houses freshman through senior students. Bondurant competes in Class 3-A. The Bluejays represent the Bondurant-Farrar Community School District as their mascot. A FEMA tornado addition should be complete in the fall of 2012 and will house art, industrial technology, and shop classes. The outdoor athletic complex is home to the school's baseball, softball, soccer, football, and track athletics. Anderson Elementary, Bondurant-Farrar Middle School, and Bondurant-Farrar High School are all located in the City of Bondurant.
Bondurant has a very aggressive tax abatement program.
