Altoona IowaAltoona was incorporated in 1876, and was named for the Latin word altus, meaning "high". This was due to the fact that the city was the highest point on the Des Moines Valley Railroad between Des Moines and Keokuk, Iowa. Altoona is located on the eastern edge of the Des Moines Metropolitan Area and has an easy commute to the rest of the Metro via I-80. Altoona has a population of approximately 15,653 people, making up 5,487 households, with an average household size of 2.68, and a median household income of approximately $68,145.

Altoona offers a wide range of entertainment, recreation, and shopping. Altoona is home to many Metro attractions including:

  • Bass Pro Shop - The outdoor retail leading store for fishing, boating, hunting, and camping
  • Adventureland and Adventure Bay Water Park - Iowa's top amusement park which has over 100 rides, shows, and attractions
  • Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino - Nearly 2,000 of Iowa's hottest slot machines, blackjack tables, roulette tables, and a smoke-free poker room
  • 17 miles of trails - Connects to the Four-Mile Trail, the Pleasant Hill trails, and the Des Moines trails

Altoona is one of the top places to be building entry level, mid-range and high-end homes in the Metro, and was chosen to host the 2011 Home Show Expo.

Altoona offers 100% new construction, residential, five-year tax abatement on the first $75,000 of the improvement.

Depending on location, Altoona is in both the Southeast Polk Community School District and the Bondurant Community School District. Southeast Polk just built a state-of-the-art high school that opened for the 2009-2010 school year. Bondurant has award winning test scores and is building a new elementary school, which Bondurant hopes will be completed by 2014.
