Altoona was incorporated in 1876, and was named for the Latin word altus, meaning "high".  This was due to the fact that the city was the highest point on the Des Moines Valley Railroad between Des Moines and Keokuk, Iowa.  Altoona is located on the eastern edge of the Des Moines Metropolitan Area and has an easy commute to the rest of the Metro via I-80.  Altoona has a population of approximately 15,653 people, making up 5,487 households, with an average household size of 2.68, and a median household income of approximately $68,145. Altoona offers a wide range of entertainment, recreation, and shopping.
